Today Microsoft has held an event to preview the next major Windows Phone update which is known as Mango and brings over 500 new features. The Redmond company confirmed that Mango will be available on new smartphones as of this fall, while Nokia said its first WP products will be Mango-powered.
The highlights of Mango include things like:
- built-in Bing search
- Multitasking
- Internet Explorer 9 mobile browser boasting support for HTML5 and hardware acceleration
- Threads - for switching between text, Facebook chat and Windows Live Messenger within the same conversation
- the ability to group contacts together into Live Tiles (Tiles which have also received an update to become more 'dynamic' and hold more data)
- Twitter and LinkedIn integrated into contact cards, built-in Facebook check-ins
- new face detection software for easier photo tagging
- a 'linked' inbox for handling multiple email accounts
- built-in voice-to-text and text-to-voice support
- location-aware search results
- quick cards for summaries on products, movies, places
- apps connected to search results
Beside showing off the future of Windows Phone, Microsoft also revealed that its platform is being adopted by Acer, ZTE and Fujitsu who are planning to release devices based on it.
