Introduction
Reservoirs come in all shapes and sizes. In the past, we have looked at the “tall cylinder” style, the Innovatek Tank-O-Matic, as well as the “small cylinder” style, the Aqua Computing Aquatube. Today we will look at the “bayres” style. The “bayres”, which is a reservoir that fits into one (or more) of the drive bays in your system, has become very popular. When used with some water dye and lighting they can provide a dramatic addition to any water-cooled system.
We are going to look at what is by far one of the biggest reservoirs on the market today, the PrimoChill Dual Bay Reservoir. This monster takes up 2 5.25” drive bays in your case and has 4 inflow and 2 outflow ports as well as a top fill cap. This configuration allows for numerous different configurations that can satisfy any extreme water cooling fanatics desires.
Before we get into the details, let’s get one thing straight. You do not NEED to have a reservoir in a water-cooled system. It is not a requirement. A simple fill and bleed kit will do the trick as well as take up a lot less space. That being said, having a reservoir makes filling and bleeding the system much easier, allows you to have more water in the system which can improve the cooling, and it simply looks cool.
PrimoChill is a relative new-comer to the cooling market, but don’t let that fool you. They are owned by and work closely with the folks at VoyuerMods. Primochill has the benefit of all the experience VoyuerMods has in the cooling and modding market. They have released versions of their Bay Reservoir in single and dual bay for 5.25” bays and as a dual 3.5” bay reservoir.
Conclusion
For those looking for a reservoir that is big, easy to install, and looks good, they don’t have to look any further. Of course, this assumes that you have 2 5.25” drive bays free; which is not always the case. For those that do not have that kind of space, PrimoChill offers the drive bay reservoir in both a single 5.25” bay version as well as a dual 3.5” bay version. The only real differences, (besides the obvious size) is that the single bay and 3.5’ version have only 4 ports.
While we like the PrimoChill Dual bay Reservoir, we do have some suggestions for the folks at PrimoChill for improvements. From a design and functionality standpoint, the only real improvement that we see is noted in the previous section. Adding more mounting options, especially the ability to use drive rails, would be a nice improvement. The only solution we see to the fill cap issue is if the actual reservoir was a little smaller, which would not necessarily be a bad thing.
From a modding standpoint, there are a few things PrimoChill can learn from some of the other companies out there. Other popular bayres make it possible to insert 3mm LEDs into the rear to light it up. We fully understand the risks, as it may have a negative impact on the integrity of the reservoir, which would be bad. However, taking the path that Aqua Computing has with their light kit would work very well, especially since there are 6 ports in the rear of the reservoir. Providing one or more of the rear caps in clear plastic, with a depression in the middle to slide a 5mm LED, would provide people the option to easily add lighting to the reservoir. And of course, offering the reservoir in colored and UV reactive acrylic would be nice as well.
The PrimoChill Dual Bay Reservoir is a well designed, well built reservoir that provides you with a large reservoir that not only makes it easy to fill and bleed your water cooling system, but it looks pretty good. One thing to keep in mind is that you can mount it in your case in other locations. It does NOT need to be installed in your drive bays. Be creative!
